We were published in the Philadelphia’s Star Newspaper for our efforts in the Annual Clean-Up Day.!.

A Cleaning Parade

-The Cohoquinoque Crew, a local artists’ collective, took to the clean up in style.

By Hayden Mitman (star staff writer)

At the intersection of girard avenue and second street, a cardboard Godzilla helped heave garbage bags into waiting trash trucks. This odd scene took place on April 10th, Philly’s annual day of community cleaning and greening. Joining the effort was the Cohoquinoque Crew, a local artists’ collective, whose 20-plus volunteers toiled along Girard Avenue wearing customes like Ashley Lyn Dodge’s cardboard Godzilla outfit in an effot to make the cleanup something more fun-a parade.

“We’re working outside;it’s fun,”said the Coho Crew member Sara Breznicky, a Northern Liberties resident, as she adjusted her skunk ear hoodie. “The city is really gross, and if no one else is going to clean it, we’re going to get it done in style,”she said.

While worry arose last week that a rainstorm might postpone the event, the weather was cool and sunny, perfect for a  day outdoors.

But, even with comfortable weather, the team’s parade didn’t come together as planned.

The crew had an elaborate plan for a “Girard Avenue Street Sweep Parade.” There were to be musicians performing and dancers frolicking along the parade’s route- a long marching path from Shackamaxon Street up Girard Avenue to 8th Street. But, after weeks of promises, Breznicky said, many people backed out. Still, artists from the Cohoquinoque Crew, along with friends and family members, took to the streets in a quieter, costumed cleaning patrol.

“Some people do a lot of talking and not a lot of action,”said Breznicky.  Fellow crew member Liz Briggs-Frandeck agreed, dressed in pink with a face covered in a make-up pattern that called to mind David Bowie’s alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.

Yet, the team did not seem dismayed. They smiled and joked as they cleaned Girard Avenue, especially the trolley platforms, which, many said were the messiest spots along thoroughfare.

“We found so many water bottles. I could save them and not need another bottle in my life,” joked Ruth Briggs.

“Yeah, that and cigarette butts. It makes me never want to smoke again,”said Breznicky.

As the crew moved along the street, they put trash into a bin mounted onto a “trike”-a three-wheeled bicycle with two wheels in front to stabilize a large connected basket. The trike was built by Haley Trikes of South Philly. Breznicky works at the company, whose owner, Stephen Horcha, was on hand during the clean up.

He said he was happy to help clean up the Northern Liberties with his friends, but joked that they all have to come help him clean South Philly next year.

“We’re sort of meeting in the middle. Next year, we’re staying in South Philly,”he promised.

The crew also hopes to use some sort of trash that they collected this weekend in an art project set for sometime this summer.

Tristan Wright, an artist in the Cohoquinoque Crew, said that as someone who has lived in a number of large cities, he was glad to help clean local streets. The city needs the sprucing up, he said.

“I’ve lived in a lot of cities, and Philly needs the help cleaning that streets,”said Wright. “We want to do this. We’re a part of the community, and you should care about the place you live in.”

Jessica Tyler said the best thing about the day was the help the crew received as they made their way along Girard Avenue.

While she was said they wanted to hold a parade with a band and dancers, this was the troupe’s first year attempting the event, and Tyler said the day was still fun and the crew is planning to do it again next year.

Tyler, joined by Ashley Lyn Dodge and crewmember Jo Watko, said that the day was about cleaning up the community and camaraderie. “It’s been great. People waiting for the train have helped us. This day brings the communities together and raises environmental awareness.”

CoHo Crew Clean-Up

March 13, 2010

Us.CoHo.Crew.ers. are makers and thinkers. Conscience of our surroundings.Conscience of our impact on the Earth. We all do small steps  by shopping organic, buying goodies from local bakeries, and recycling.

It is time to Think.Think.Bigger.

We wrote a proposal for our cities Clean-Up day for that beast called money. Whether or not the crew receives the money for rubber gloves and poking sticks. You will see us in a Parade on Girard with rubber gloves and poking sticks.

If you want to be involved. Please.By.all Means. Do. Whether you join our team.make your own.or walk alone. Be Involved.

*Description of the organization: (mission, history, and accomplishments, with a focus on capacity to develop the proposed project.)

The Cohoquinoque Crew is a collective of artists in Philadelphia catalyzing creativity in their community through positive social adventures. The crew is comprised of contemporary artists who, for the love of making, wish to preserve and promote the innovative culture found in their neighborhoods-Fishtown and Northern Liberties.

The Coho Crew hosts community and environmental service activities to sustain clean and growing neighborhoods. We, also, hope to promote friendship and cooperation between these two neighborhoods.

The most recent accomplishment of the Coho Crew is the Rock Bass Rainbow Fest, a two day festival comprised of a fashion show, music, and an art/craft fair. The festival featured local artists, musicians, and vendors. Participants and patrons during the festivities donated food for our city’s Philabundance program.

Our goal is to use our creative resources for positive impact in our neighborhood and in our city. During Philly’s Spring Clean Up day, our collective hopes to inspire fellow neighbors by joining in our enthusiasm and dedication to the environment and our community.

  • Description of the neighborhood: (boundaries of the area neighborhood, appearance and open spaces (including community facilities)

The Coho Crew’s focus for this project will be on their neighborhoods of Northern Liberties and Fishtown; specifically on the street that splits them, Girard Avenue!

  • Description of the project: (location, current condition, plans for site use, progress on this plan, community support for project, and any match funding or agreements with partner organizations.)

Girard Avenue is covered in trash. Our small group will make a big difference by cleaning from Shackamaxon Street, the location that William Penn and the Lennape Indians signed a peace treaty, continuing our march down Girard Avenue, concluding at 8th and Poplar. Our crew will then join forces with the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association to clean up the baseball park.

We are proposing a cleaning parade consisting of the following: colorful trash and recycling bins, musical instruments, participants in costumes, gaining attention for our cause. The whole process will be filmed and documented for a later art project. The collective of artists that make up the Coho Crew will then take what was found on Girard and either dispose of it accordingly or create a collaborative art piece to commemorate Philly’s Annual Spring Clean up!

Through advertising for this parade and through the fun energy we create on the day of the clean up, we hope to have volunteers join in helping us with this project.

  • Impact of the project and future sustainability: (planned or anticipated programming in project location, plans for continued maintenance (including long-term maintenance budget and timeline), and how project fits into community plans for neighborhood.)

It is our hope that this parade will inspire the neighborhoods of Fishtown and Northern Liberties to take more pride in their surroundings and take care of their streets.

It is also a way to express concern to the advisory committees of these neighborhoods to take a look at how unclean the border between these two communities have become, and, maybe, they will initiate a plan to start beautifying this area.

This clean up day will not only brighten up Girard Avenue, it will also be a catalyst for future clean up projects and art pieces amongst our energetic and creative neighbors.
